Tandem Roller vs Single Roller Dynamometer

Single Roller Dynamometer

When looking to purchase a dyno machine, you have so many different choices to make when it comes to the make and model. There are many different designs out there and you may have to choose between the following:

  • Engine dyno or chassis dyno
  • Power absorption options
  • In-ground or above-ground dynos

While there is a lot to discuss regarding these various options, this article will discuss the major differences between tandem roller dynamo meters and single roller dynamo meters.

When purchasing a dyno, you’ll have to choose between a single roller or twin roller. The difference is quite obvious by the name. Single rollers use one roller for dyno testing and tuning, while tandem roller dynos make use of two smaller rollers.

Tandem Roller Dyno Features

  • Each tire is nestled in a pair of inline rollers when testing and tuning
  • Testing and tuning time is greatly reduced due to tire heat and wear from tire crush
  • During low Hp testing, this may reduce the need to strap the vehicle into place
  • Slightly more complex to use than a single roller dyno
  • Lower costs involved in purchase cost
  • Front-rear roll coupling is necessary to safely test AWD vehicles
  • At higher speeds and wheel Hp, safety and accuracy may be compromised
  • Can easily be taken in and out of the testing bay
  • Upgrading to AWD is relatively expensive

 Single Roller Dynamometer

Single Roller Dyno Features

  • Tires are placed on top of a single roll during testing and tuning
  • Reduced tire wear and heat with single contact patch
  • Higher Hp possible with larger roller inertia of single roller
  • Higher Traction with larger inertia of single roller
  • The Vehicle needs to be properly strapped in for all testing
  • Easy to use
  • Lower upfront and operational costs involved
  • Highly accurate, repeatable results
  • Front-rear roll coupling is not necessary
  • Usually requires permanent placement as it cannot be easily moved around
  • Upgrading to AWD can be inexpensive

Which Dyno Is Best?

The dyno that is best for you and your workshop will depend on your specific needs. It is always advisable to speak to a dyno specialist when deciding so that they can offer you expert advice. With that being said, many workshop owners tend to prefer single roller dynos because of their impressive features and how they can overcome the various challenges presented by dyno tuning.
